Babu Chaitanyadas had studied economics extensively, and he had not merely studied it—he also put it properly into practice. He was a lawyer; he owned zamindari in two or three villages and had some money in the bank as well. All this was the fruit of his knowledge of economics. Whenever an expense presented itself, a question would naturally arise in his mind: would this benefit me personally, or some other man? If neither of the two stood to gain anything from it, he would, with great ruthlessness, throttle that expense. He regarded waste as he would poison. The principles of economics had become the pillars of his life.
